Payroll FAQs

What is a payslip?

A payslip shows the composition of an employee's wages or salary in a given period. It is often used as written proof of payment.

In Germany, employees receive a Lohnabrechnung (wage slip) or Gehaltsabrechnung (salary slip).

What must be on a payslip?

All itemised deductions from the gross income amount, including wage tax (Lohnsteuer), church tax (Kirchensteuer) and the solidarity surcharge (Solidaritätszuschlag).

There is also a breakdown of social security contributions (Sozialabgaben), health insurance (Krankenversicherung), unemployment insurance (Arbeitslosenversicherung), pension insurance (Rentenversicherung) and long-term care insurance (Pflegeversicherung).

What is the difference between a wage and a salary?

The term wage (Lohn) and salary (Gehalt) both describe a type of financial remuneration for work performed. The difference is that a wage refers to the actual hours worked and can therefore fluctuate monthly. With a salary, on the other hand, a fixed monthly amount is paid.

What do the abbreviations on the payslip stand for?

There are a lot of accounting abbreviations on an employee’s payslip to get your head around. To help you out, we’ve created this list that explains what each abbreviation means in English.

What exactly are benefits in kind in payroll accounting?

Benefits in kind (Sachbezüge) are all benefits to the employee that do not consist of the payment of wages or salary. It’s an added perk on top of an employee’s income. The general term for various types of benefits in kind is geldwerter Vorteil (imputed income).

What is the Beitragsbemessungsgrenze?

Beitragsbemessungsgrenze translates to contribution assessment ceiling - a threshold that determines the upper limit of income on which social security contributions can be paid. The part of the income that exceeds this limit is exempt from contributions. The income thresholds are adjusted annually by the federal government.

What is a Übergangsbereich?

The Übergangsbereich (formerly called Gleitzone) refers to a transitional zone that concerns “midi-jobbers”. They earn more than “mini-jobbers” but less than permanent employees (from €450.01-1,300 per month). Both midi-jobbers and employers still benefit from reduced social security contributions within this zone.
